The photograph Mt. McKinley, Wonder Lake Denali National Park, Alaska was taken in the summer of 1947 while ANSEL ADAMS was in Alaska on a Guggenheim Fellowship. The dark marked one of the rare cloudless days of that singular summer in Alaska. ADAMS and his son Michael spent over a week in the Alaskan ranger station awaiting just the right conditions. The iconic image of the majestic mountain, featuring Wonder Lake in the foreground, was ultimately captured with the photographer favored 8Ă10 camera at precisely 1:30 in the morning. In the words of ANSEL ADAMS, âyou don't take a photograph, you make it.â
ANSEL ADAMS (American, 1902â1984)Â is widely regarded as one of the most famous photographers of all time, particularly in reference to his striking images of the American wilderness. Adams placed great value upon technical mastery of his craft, carefully evaluating gradations of light in the image, manipulating degree of exposure, and constantly experimenting with new techniques. Along with contemporaries Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston, Adams founded the group f/64, devoted to what they termed âstraight photography,â as opposed to staged or embellished images. Adams was also pivotal in the establishment of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art. - ARTSY
